Main and NxtLvl Labs
Main and NxtLvl Labs are the foundation of The Crit Lab. Utilizing the unique observation and language-based pedagogy developed by Patricia Miranda, these Labs consist of a small cohort of max 7 dedicated artists. The same cohort engages in an in-depth 5 month conversation around their work. The discussion is led by the cohort; all artists participate using the Crit Lab guidelines. Each artist has one 35-40 minute individual critique each month.
Main Lab
Main Lab is open to artists at any place in their practice, from working artists with a long studio practice to artists emerging in their practice. Artists develop skills of critical analysis and language around their work and the work of their cohort.
NxtLvl Lab
NxtLvl Labs include artists who have been engaged in serious studio practice and discourse around their work for an extended time, with a depth of familiarity around critique language and format. NxtLvl Labs offer optional studio plans, additional readings, discussion, and professional development.
All Labs are curated for maximum engagement and connection. An application enters your work into the curatorial process. Participants are placed by the Lab into groups that offer strong connection, inspiring thematic overlap as well as critical difference, to create strong meaningful dialogue. Artists learn most from the peer dialogue of the curated group.
Main and NxtLvl Labs have a max of 7 artists.
The Lab meets for a 5 month session, in 10 concentrated 3.5 hour meetings with the same cohort for all five months. Each artist has one 35-40 minute individual critique each month.

Project Lab
The Project Lab is a smaller cohort of 4 artists with extended time for each artist each month.
Project Labs include focused critique using The Critical Lab pedagogy. Additionally, this Lab focuses on writing- including active development and editing of statements and proposals, curating of images for submissions, and designing websites to best represent your ideas and work. Each artist has a 1-1.5 hour session each month focused solely on on their work.
Project Lab includes artists who have been engaged in serious studio practice and discourse around their work for an extended time, with a depth of familiarity around critique language and format.
All Labs are curated for maximum engagement and connection. An application enters your work into the curatorial process. Participants are placed by the Lab into groups that offer strong connection, inspiring thematic overlap as well as critical difference, to create strong meaningful dialogue. Artists learn most from the peer dialogue of the curated group.
Project Lab has a max 4 artists and requires prior or comparable experience to a NxtLvl Lab.
The Lab meets for a 5 month session, in 10 concentrated 3.5 hour meetings with the same cohort for all five months. Each artist has one 1-1.5 hour individual critique each month.

Max Lab
5 month Lab with 7 artists and 3 faculty;
Patricia Miranda, and Visiting Faculty Gaby Collins-Fernandez, Brian Bishop, and Lucinda Bliss

The same cohort engages in an in-depth 5 month conversation around their work. Each month the meetings are with a different faculty member. The final meetings are a group Crit with all three faculty. Each artist receives one 40 minute Crit each month dedicated solely to their work.

Meets twice a month for 5 months. Each artist receives one 40 minute Crit with each faculty member dedicated solely to their work. Final 2 meetings include crit with all 4 faculty.

Duet Lab
The Duet Lab is an intensive Lab with 2 artists. This Intensive Lab brings two artists together to develop an individualized plan, with goals and intentions for ongoing meetings, guided by Patricia Miranda. This Lab focuses on critique as well as writing- including active development and editing of statements and proposals, curating of images for submissions, and designing websites to best represent your ideas and work. Each artist has a 1.5 hour crit each month focused solely on on their work.
Artists may partner with another artist they know or can be paired by the Lab.
All Labs are curated for maximum engagement and connection. An application enters your work into the curatorial process. Participants are placed by the Lab into groups that offer strong connection, inspiring thematic overlap as well as critical difference, to create strong meaningful dialogue. Artists learn most from the peer dialogue of the curated group.
Duet Lab has max 2 artists, and requires prior or comparable experience in a NxtLvl Lab.
Meets for a 5 Month session, once per month. Each artist has a 1.5 hour critique with their work. Dates for this Lab are organized with the artists.

Solo Lab
Private single and ongoing consult and critique sessions with Patricia Miranda and Crit Lab faculty.
These Labs are individually designed with the artists. They are especially beneficial for artists who want to focus on working intensively on their specific projects. Artists working on time sensitive, longer term projects, larger proposals, or solo exhibitions in need of dedicated planning, writing, curating may find this Lab most beneficial. Each meeting is 1.5 hours.
This Lab begins with a planning consult to build a meaningful and practical structure in order to accomplish the tasks in the time the artist requires. The number of meetings varies with the needs of the artist. Sessions generally range from one-three for statements, more for involved proposals.

This Lab has max 1 artist, and meets on a planned schedule for 1.5 hour sessions.
Patricia Miranda has 20+ years of extensive experience working with artists on critique, curation, and writing about their work. Her focus and skill is on supporting artists to concisely articulate the ideas, to hone in on contexts and materials to best represent their work. This includes leading 50-75 critiques monthly in the lab, and teaching professional practice in graduate, undergrad, professional, and Lab programs. A rigorous, structured, pragmatic approach is applied to all meetings, offering tools for the artist to utilize in the moment and moving forward.
Tuition: $275 for one 1.5 hour consult
$175 each for multiple.

Hybrid and In-Person Labs
Hybrid and In-person Labs meet in person at MAPSpace in Port Chester, NY, or in the studio of an artist in the cohort. These Labs can be Main, NxtLvl, Project, Duet, or Solo Labs.
Hybrid Labs
Hybrid Lab organizes 1-2 of the ten meetings to take place in person at MAPSpace or studio of a cohort. The rest of the session is virtual.
In-Person Lab
In-Person Lab gathers 5 times for full day meetings over the 5 month session. This Lab meets in person at MAPSpace in Port Chester, NY, or in the studio of an artist in the cohort.
All Labs are curated for maximum engagement and connection. An application enters your work into the curatorial process. Participants are placed by the Lab into groups that offer strong connection, inspiring thematic overlap as well as critical difference, to create strong meaningful dialogue. Artists learn most from the peer dialogue of the curated group.
These Labs require artists to be in close enough proximity to attend in Port Chester, NY, or to travel once a month. Alternatively, the Labs can meet in another location at a participating artist's studio. Additional costs are required if the Lab takes place in a studio outside of close proximity of Westchester, NY or NYC.
